Stories Behind the Pages – The Wooden Horse

The Wooden Horse tells the remarkable true story of one of the Second World War's most ingenious prisoner of war escapes. Made famous by the classic 1950 film, the book reveals how British prisoners at Stalag Luft III built a vaulting horse to conceal the entrance to a secret tunnel, patiently deceiving their German guards for months.

In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, Tim Heale explores the real history behind the book and the film, uncovering the courage, determination and quiet ingenuity of the men whose escape became one of the greatest true stories of the war.

Stories Behind the Pages - We Die Alone

We Die Alone – The Extraordinary Story of Jan Baalsrud
Some books entertain.

Others educate. A very small number stay with you for the rest of your life.We Die Alone by David Howarth is one of those books.

It tells the astonishing true story of Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian resistance fighter whose escape across the frozen mountains of northern Norway in 1943 has become one of the greatest survival stories of the Second World War.
Wounded, hunted by German forces and facing impossible odds, Baalsrud survived thanks to extraordinary courage, determination and the selfless help of ordinary Norwegian men and women who risked everything to keep him alive.

Having recently watched both the classic Norwegian film Nine Lives (Ni Liv) and the modern adaptation The 12th Man, I was reminded just how powerful this story remains more than eighty years later. While each film tells the same remarkable tale, they do so in very different ways, and both are well worth watching alongside Howarth's outstanding book.

This article accompanies my latest podcast episode, where I explore the real history behind the pages, the people behind the story, and why Jan Baalsrud's courage continues to inspire generations.

Looking Ahead Later this year I hope to travel to northern Norway.

If all goes to plan, I'll visit Narvik, Tromsø and the village of Manndalen, where Jan Baalsrud is buried. It will be an opportunity to pay my respects to a remarkable man and to the ordinary people whose courage ensured his survival.
